
“The Medal of Honor” was instituted in 1862 during the Civil War. Since that time 3458 Americans have received this highest honor of their country. Of those 13 were awarded to Delawarean’s:

1 the insurrection that followed in the Philippines after the war with Spain
2 during World War II
Four other Medal of Honor Recipients, who were born in Delaware but are credited to another state, are also honored here as "Native Son's of the First State".
